"Vietnam Veterans Day”
MARCH 30, 2010

Legislation to Honor Service Members who Fought in Vietnam
U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, announced that a resolution he introduced encouraging communities across the nation to establish “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” was passed unanimously by the United States Senate. The resolution designates March 30, 2010, as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day, to honor the return home of our armed service members after serving in Vietnam.
“There’s no question that our troops served our country bravely and faithfully during the Vietnam War, and these veterans deserve our recognition and gratitude,” Burr said. “Unfortunately, when these service members returned home, they were caught in the crossfire of public debate about our nation’s involvement in the Vietnam War. As a result, these brave men and women never received the welcome reception and recognition they deserved.”
“We owe all of our Veterans a debt of gratitude for their service to this nation,” Senator Inhofe said. “That is why I am so committed to fighting for veteran issues, and that includes honoring those who have worn our nation’s uniform. I am pleased to join my colleagues in support of this resolution honoring those who served in the Vietnam War. Sadly, many of them were greeted with jeers instead of cheers when they returned home. It is my hope that our military members are never again treated this way, and this resolution takes a step in that direction by correcting the past.”
The United States became involved in Vietnam because policy-makers believed that if South Vietnam fell to a communist government, communism would spread throughout the rest of Southeast Asia. The US Armed Forces began serving in an advisory role to the South Vietnamese in 1961, and in 1965, ground combat troops were sent into Vietnam. After many years of combat, all US troops were withdrawn from Vietnam on March 30, 1973, under the terms of the Treaty of Paris. Therefore, March 30, 2010, is an appropriate day to establish “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.”
More than 58,000 members of the United States Armed Forces lost their lives and more than 300,000 were wounded in Vietnam. The establishment of a “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” would serve as a small way to honor these men and women who served our country in Vietnam throughout the war. ___________________________________________________________________________

Time Line - February 12, 2010 Philip Dain Powell Entertains Our Troops If you hear the name Philip Dain Powell spoke, you may want to pay attention! This incredible man, his band and staff are truly inspirational. American Veterans Radio had the honor to attend and broadcast Philip’s USO backed concert performed live at U.S. Military Installation Camp Atterbury Indiana. The concert was intended specifically for Our U.S. Service Men and Women preparing for deployment to Afghanistan, Iraq, and/or Kosovo – and they loved it! Whether it was Phil’s booming but smooth voice, the great harmonizing of the band, or a ‘get down on it’ guitar riff, the energy was radiating throughout the venue from start to finish. The soldiers and civilians’ alike were clapping their hands, bobbing the heads to the beat and smiling from ear to ear with almost every selection played. We say almost with the exception of “Save Me a Place at The Table” which is truly a stirring song dedicated to our Veterans. Please take some time to visit Philip Dain Powell’s website (just click on Phil’s photograph) to find out how you too can have this inspiring entertainer perform at your next gathering – you won’t regret it! __________________________________________________________ Time Line: January 29, 2010

Your Right to Salute the American Flag
ALL Veterans Can Now Salute the US Flag Without being in Uniform
The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (Public Law 110-181) changed Sect. 9, Title 4, U.S. Code, which covers “Conduct during hoisting, lowering or passing of flag.” Following is that section of the U.S. Code, as reworded by the law change. Please share this information with all veterans. “During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all persons present in uniform should render the military salute. Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Citizens of other countries present should stand at attention. All such conduct toward the flag in a moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes.”
